John Otway - May 12thJohn Otway was born in Aylesbury, learned to play the violin at school and got an early taste of performing in the Aylesbury Youth Orchestra. Otway got together with Wild Willy Barrett in the seventies and they had one big hit 'Really Free' which reached number 27 in the charts in 1977. Otway and Barrett went their separate ways after a few years and Otway went on the road with many others including a band called The Europeans, Ollie Halsall, and Attila The Stockbroker. In 1999 the BBC ran a poll to find the greatest lyrics of the millenium, and Otway was a surprise entry at number 7 with his song 'Beware of the Flowers', which came above artists like Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon and even Bob Dylan. John Otway currently tours as a solo act; as a duo with Richard Holgarth (also of Eddie and the Hot Rods; and often with his Big Band which includes Murray Torkildsen, Seymour, Adam Batterbee and guest keyboard player Barry Upton. Throughout 2005 and 2006 Otway teamed up with The Hamsters and Wilko Johnson as part of The Mad, The Bad & The Dangerous Tour. A DVD of the tour was released in 2007. John will be performing at the Bury Fringe Festival as part of his 'I Did It Otway' book launch tour, with a signing session at the Buttermarket branch of Waterstones from 5.30pm prior to the live performance at the Constitutional Club from 7.30pm.
