Ravenwing Studios - a relaxed and friendly recording studio set in the beautiful suffolk countryside.
The Bury St Edmunds Fringe Festival 2010 would like to shout from the rooftops - our programme is finally here!! With a wealth of comedy, music and all manner of entertainments, we proudly present a packed schedule of events which celebrates and showcases Suffolk and East Anglian talent. The majority of performers appearing during the fortnight are from the East of England, although we admit we've enticed a few back from their (inter)national careers! Those who aren't locals are here because they believe in the Fringe and our emphasis on community and the 'feel-good' factor.
We would love to see everyone in Bury St Edmunds walking around with a big smile on their faces if only for a couple of weeks, and we very much hope that you'll find something in our events to make you do just that. We've included ideas to enhance your physical wellbeing too, not just to give you a giggle, so try something new while the chance is here! And there are still more events to be added once we tweak those final details, so do check back regularly and look out for posters and flyers around the town.
We would also like to say an immense 'thank you' to our sponsors, CEG Productions, Benson Blakes, The Hunter Club, Bartram's Brewery and Feel Good Media, without whom we just couldn't have put this together. We are also indebted to Roundabout Magazine and The Grapevine for their coverage over the last few months, as well as all the promoters and venues who continue to support us. The Fringe Festival is completely unfunded, and just goes to prove what can be achieved, big budget or not. We've had a great time planning all this, and now the REAL fun can begin...

Beatglider - www.myspace.com/beatgliderband
Formed in the late 90s through a love of 80s and 90s shoegazer bands as well as US influences including Sonic Youth, Flaming Lips and Pavement. They have recorded three albums to date and have recently supported The Wedding Present and The Telescopes.
‘sherbert-sweet melodies, deranged instrumentation (trumpets, bird whistles) and whacked out lyrics about strange creatures...A glorious mess.’ NME
Kunk - www.myspace.com/kunk
Creating a sound that is ‘somewhere between the demented growl of Mclusky and the early Britrock might of 3 Colours Red, Kunk put on a live show that excites, tantalises and scares the crowd in equal measure. Their high energy gigs and fast growing reputation have earned them support slots with The Subways, Nine Black Alps and The Airborne Toxic Event amonst others.
Championed by BBC Introducing’s Huw Stephens and 6Music’s Tom Robinson, the band have also seen their tracks used in MTV shows including The Real World and Keeping Up With The Kardashians. They have a UK tour and album planned for June, but you can see them here first.
Glory Glory - www.myspace.com/glorygloryband1
‘A boy/girl two-piece, were a revelation duelling with some really electrifying guitar and drum work whilst battling lyrics back and forth like a Murray/Nadal rally.’ Maddog Magazine.
‘Raw, punktastic & gagging for it...one of East Anglia’s brightest hopes.’ WombatWombat
Headfull - www.myspace.com/headful
Formed in Bury St Edmunds in late 2007 and quickly gained a reputation for being packed full of funk and energy, going on to win BurySOUND in 2008. Since then they have headlined the critically acclaimed ‘UV Bury’ event and performed in Cambridge and beyond. After a recent break to work on new material they are now back to do what they do best, with the release of their first 6-track EP imminent.
The Blazing Zoos – www.myspace.com/theblazingzoos
There may be less likely country bands in the world than The Blazing Zoos, but this seems unlikely. As of late 2009 the band were playing again after a longish hiatus, with a new line-up and an album, ‘I’ll Leave Quietly’ released earlier this year to critical acclaim.
‘Undoubtedly fun, but they also have depth...an extremely welcome addition to the UK country scene’ Americana UK.
Four Monks and A Nun - 'The Ten Commandments'
An edgy, clean and thought-provoking Christian comedy sketch group, whose sketches tend to focus on aspects of religion, modern Christianity and biblical principals, as well as incorporating elements of the different cultures (Iraqi, Zimbabwean, West Indian, Ugandan, Nigerian and of course British) that reflect the groups’ diversity. This show opened in August 2009 to sell out crowds at the acclaimed Roundhouse Theatre.
Group founder and writer Yazz Fetto has been putting on comedy shows for many years, taking two to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He has written for shows such as BBC Radio 4’s ‘Dead Ringers’ and produced the cult-hit British comedy-horror movie ‘Freak Out’.
‘...had the audience hooting...sharp, expertly delivered and hilarious’ The Londonist
‘That rarest of things in comedy – a Christian sketch group’ Time Out
‘Beatifully performed sketches...A show not to be missed’ The Link
Tony Cowards - 'Festival of Football' + 'The OO Show'
Tony Cowards has two passions in life, football and comedy, which he effectively combines by being a lifelong supporter of his hometown football club, Ipswich Town. ‘Festival of Football’ is a semi-autobiographical stand up show examining the effect that football has had on his life and what it means to be a supporter in these days of Russian oil billionaires and American corporate takeovers. Is football still, as Karl Marx decribed it, the ‘Opium of the masses’, or is it now the Bolivian marching powder of the prawn sandwich brigade?
Followed by stand up from the cream of East Anglia’s comedy talent including Dan McKee, Tom Reed and Henry Winkler.
‘genuinely funny’ The Stage review of ‘Festival of Football’, Edinburgh Festival 2007
‘My favourite joke of the Festival so far was told to me by a Suffolk stand-up comedian and die-hard Ipswich fan Tony Cowards’ Hardeep Singh Koli, The Scotsman on Sunday (and BBC1’s ‘The One Show’).

Paul Richards Double Bill - 'Some Plays About Indie Rock' + 'Cat Food'
Two short productions written by internationally published, Cambridge-based playwright Paul Richards (previous credits include 4 Edinburgh Fringe shows, and performances of his work at RADA, The Contact Theatre (Manchester) and Cambridge’s Menagerie Theatre among others).
Some Plays About Indie Rock - 3 brand new, very short (10 mins each) dark comedy plays about music - ‘Honey, I’ve Been Really Struggling’, ‘Reviewing Jonathan’ and ‘Jason’s Last Night In Town’, performed by an exceptional cast with an even better soundtrack.
Followed by:
Cat Food is a manic, alternative comedy; a wild beast is terrorising the locals of small-minded town Little Arwick, causing a media frenzy right on the verge of the local election. Sooner or later, leading candidates Tori and Gregory realise there’s only one way to win votes - and that’s to have The Fenland Tiger killed…if only they knew he was actually just a very friendly overgrown kitten called James who just wants to make friends…
Jim Bob - 'Storage Stories-Storage Songs'
Supported by Chris T-T
‘Storage Stories’ is a darkly comic fictional autobiographical novel and collection of short stories told in words and pictures that, if nothing else finally solves the mystery of what happened to all the missing boybands.
To coincide with the book Jim Bob begins his UK reading and music tour, where he’ll read from the novel and perform songs from his back catalogue: both Carter USM and solo. He promises a slide show and bubble machines.
‘It’s really very, very good. It’s charming, funny, tender and delicate.’ Dave Gorman
‘Kurt Vonnegut meets Carter USM.’ Andrew Collins
Supporting Jim Bob on his tour is the widely acclaimed singer/songwriter Chris T-T who has released six albums to date and will be performing songs from his latest album 'Love Is Not Rescue' released on the 15th of March 2010.
His resumé includes shows with: Ben Folds, British Sea Power, The Divine Comedy, Elbow, Bellowhead, The National, The Walkmen, Quasi, Tom Robinson, Brakes, Frank Turner, Electric Soft Parade, KT Tunstall, Emma Pollock (Delgados), Carter USM, The Broken Family Band, Jim Bob, author Iain Sinclair, Madrugada, Hefner, Robyn Hitchcock, Ricky Ross (Deacon Blue) and many others.

Doug Segal - 'The Mind Control Show'
Described by TimeOut Magazine as ‘the UK’s best kept entertainment secret’, Doug, in his own words, is not a magician, clairvoyant or hypnotist; everything he does is achieved through application of psychological principles, suggestion techniques, misdirection, understanding the human mind, and ‘cheating and lying’. He has had 14 night sell-out runs of public shows at both London’s Barons Court Theatre, and the Jermyn Street Theatre, Piccadilly, smashing the former venue’s seventeen year box office record in the process.
Add to that two live 10 minute spots on BBC 1 New Years Live with Natasha Kaplinski and Claire Balding, with a worldwide-record-breaking number of 9.5 million live viewers, and we think you’ll see this act is really something unique.
